Who loves LA traffic? No one, that’s why we live in Calabasas. But in Calabasas, the driving could get worse before it gets better. City officials are asking drivers to be patient while multiple public and private road-construction projects take place throughout the city.
The work includes street widening in the Mulholland Highway and Las Virgenes Road corridors, and construction of a new freeway overpass at Lost Hills Road. Some of the work may cause congestion during peak hours, particularly around schools, the city said.
“We have done our best at regulating construction hours and have also asked the sheriff’s department to assist us with traffic control and with the monitoring of driver behavior in some of these areas,” Public Works Director Robert Yalda said.
It may take a little bit of time to get the “bugs worked out,” Yalda said.
“We encourage parents to drop off early and pick up late to help defer traffic congestion around the schools in the mornings and afternoons,” he said.
The city has received complaints from some parents who leave at the last minute to get their kids to school. But as the school year progresses, there are fewer delays and late arrivals as parents change their departure times, Yalda said.
To ensure the safety of children who arrive at school early, the City of Calabasas provides on-site staff supervision for students in the mornings at Lupin Hill and Bay Laurel elementary schools and at the two middle schools, A.E. Wright and A.C. Stelle.
City staff, sheriff’s deputies and contractors are working together to ensure the safety of drivers and to minimize disruptions for residents and students, Yalda said.
